Obituary of John William Gardiner

John William Gardiner, 65, of Locust Valley, NY went home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

 

Beloved husband for 43 years of Linda; loving father of sons William (Colleen), Graham (Alex Jeffrey), and James; grandfather of Catherine; son of James and Ethel Gardiner; brother to Jean Sylvia (David) and Scott Gardiner (Kim); son-in-law of Norman and Nanette Simpson; brother-in-law of Laurie Schaefer (Phil), Suzanne Uhrynuk (Mark) and Jennifer Allen (David); as well as uncle to many nieces and nephews.

 

John was born on December 30, 1953 in West Hartford, CT.

 

After attending Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL and graduating from Ithaca College, John received an MPH from Columbia University.

 

John began his career as a Physical Therapist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  After graduate school, he worked at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center where he established outpatient clinics in Upper Manhattan and then went on to be the Executive Director of the University Hospital Newark, NJ Doctors Office Center.  In 2001, John returned to his true passion of direct patient care, founding Gardiner Physical Therapy Services in Glen Cove, NY.

 

John was a member of the Glen Cove Hospital Advisory Committee and of the Shelter Rock Church in Syosset, NY, where he was involved in its children’s ministry.  

 

Supported by a dedicated and loyal staff, John truly enjoyed treating his patients.  He healed our aches and loved our hearts. He was a role model to many, a true gentleman and a kind soul, always putting the needs of others before his own.

 

A celebration of the life of John W. Gardiner will be held on Friday, March 15 at 1:30 pm at Shelter Rock Church 178 Cold Spring Road, Syosset, New York.  

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shelter Rock Church Children's Ministry, Syosset, New York; The Glen Cove Hospital, Glen Cove, New York; Memorial Sloan Kettering Head and Neck Division, New York, New York.
