Obituary of David B. Benham

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

David B. Benham, a longtime resident of Locust Valley, New York, and Palm Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at the age of 79. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Margaret (Wise), his son Clifton and wife Anna of Stamford, CT, and his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Tyler and his sister Elizabeth Antonelli. David especially cherished his granddaughters, Mabon and Annabel, whom he loved deeply.

Born on September 6, 1945, to Elizabeth (DiTommaso) and Victor B. Benham, David grew up in Garden City, New York, and attended Trinity-Pawling School and C.W. Post University. He was Chairman of Victor B. Benham & Co. Ltd., a ship brokerage firm established by his grandfather in 1920. Exceptionally hardworking, David led the business through decades of growth, establishing it as a key player in the global transportation of sugar, coffee, and other commodities, with operations spanning New York and London.

A man of refined interests and deep commitment to his community, David was a dedicated member of the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, where he served on numerous committees and as a Governor for seven years.

David’s passions brought joy to his life and those around him. A man of many hobbies, he delighted in the art of gardening, the beauty of antiques and architecture, and the thrill of shooting excursions in the U.K. He had a passion for traveling and exploring new places, but his heart always found its greatest joy at his beloved Lake George.

David was a true gentleman whose grace, leadership, and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his family and many friends, who will miss him profoundly.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at St. John's of Lattingtown Church, with a reception to follow at the Piping Rock Club. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Lake George, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY 12564.
