Obituary of Jane Margaret Griffin

Please share a memory of Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jane Margaret Griffin of Glen Cove, NY died peacefully on December 13, 2024, following a brief illness.  She was born on January 6, 1930, to the late George and Margaret (nee Crowe) Griffin on a farm in Waterbury, CT and was the third of nine siblings.

Jane married William (“Bill”) Doran Carmody on July 7, 1952, in Waterbury, CT, and they chose to settle in Levittown, NY where they raised their three children. Having been reared on a farm by a father who was a builder, Jane was tough as nails and learned to be strong and self-sufficient at a young age.  She developed a talent for carpentry and enjoyed building furniture.  She was a gifted seamstress who designed and made her own clothes.   For more than forty years, Jane joyfully taught elementary school in the Seaford School District.  Upon her retirement, she began her lifelong dream to travel.  Adventure took her around the world.  Throughout her life, she enjoyed an apple-a-day and walked everywhere she could, practicing a healthy lifestyle over the course of her almost ninety-five years.

Predeceasing Jane were her parents George and Margaret Griffin, her husband Bill Carmody, her son Timothy J. Carmody and her siblings George Griffin, Robert Griffin, Patricia Griffin Adams, Maura Griffin Wojtusik, Frank “Butch” Griffin, and Kathleen Griffin Axelrod.  She is survived by her children Bill Carmody (Catherine) of Miami Beach, FL and Jane Carmody Byrne (Kevin) of Locust Valley, NY; her grandchildren Ben Curley of Carlsbad, CA, Isabella Byrne of New York, NY, Emma Byrne Termini (Joe) of West Chester, PA; her two brothers Gerry Griffin (Linda) and Paul Griffin (Jackie); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jane was passionate about supporting veterans, and for those wishing to donate in her memory, please consider a gift to Next Peak, Click Here or to a charity of your choice.  The family gives special thanks to Maureen McAllum who was devoted and loving, and to The Hospice Inn at Huntington in Melville for their compassion.  A celebration of Jane’s life will be held in the New Year.
