Michael Varous

Obituary of Michael Varous

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Varous, Michael on of Glen Cove, NY on April 12, 2020 from COVID-19.  Loving husband of 57 years to Dorothy and devoted father to Michael and Christopher (Barbara). He was a cherished “Poppa” to Elizabeth and Marie.  Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Mike’s simplistic approach to life and the joy he took in his friends and family provided for a great quality of life. This built a strong foundation for his children and grandchildren.  We called him the “king of clichés” as he explained the solution to many problems with them.  He also loved his country and was proud to have served in the US Army in WWII in Okinawa.  As he said often, “if they would take me back, I’d do it again tomorrow.”

Mike was a long- time employee of Pan American Airlines where he made deep and long-lasting friendships with his colleagues, a few of which were part of our family as “aunts, uncles and cousins.”

An avid reader, Mike was a wealth of knowledge, able to answer many Jeopardy questions from the living room couch.  He would often exchange books with his brother Elias “Lou” Varous who unfortunately succumbed to the same illness on the same day. They are now joined with their dear, younger sister Vivian in Heaven. Our dad and uncle were the closest of brothers and when they were healthy, spoke to each other almost daily.  It is not surprising they remained together.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
