Dear Steve,
You are gone way too soon. Our family has precious memories of you as our neighbor. We will miss the conversations with you while sipping wine on summer evenings, sharing your description of Iowa and riding the train together. We know how much you grieved the loss of your parents. And now we are grieving your loss. We wish that this were not so. We wish that this episode we are witnessing were just a bad dream we could all undo. Life is short, life is precious and it is difficult to predict at times. We do not know all of the answers, but just keep asking the questions. Oh for one more train ride together with you; one more glass of wine on a summer night; or one more wave as we diverge into our own days in our own lives. We will try our best to comfort Ian and Jean Luc and continue being good neighbors down here on Trubee Hill.

This is so sad to learn. Steven and my daughters Erin (Boike) Bolin and Jill (Boike) Crosser we friends from little on. They were part of the Brentwood Drive friends.

Steve will always be remembered in the Textiles and Apparel Program at the University of Northern Iowa for his generous mentoring of others and his leadership. His involvement in the Mentors in Violence Prevention program on campus also made a difference, highlighting the role that bystanders can play in preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
As a design show director and stellar student in the program Steve modeled so much for so many. He will always be remembered by me for his kindness to me the year of my mother's death. Her funeral fell the weekend of the design show and despite being design show director that year Steve attended her funeral and helped me in so many ways make it through that difficult time period. I am grateful that we got to share a breakfast a year ago at Morg's in Waterloo, Iowa. All three faculty members he worked with at UNI were at the breakfast and we all got to catch up with Steve and learn about the love and friendships he had in his life in NYC.
I am praying for everyone working to make their way through this unexpected loss of a gem of a human being. Please know that at UNI Steve will always be remembered, and alums and faculty of the Textiles and Apparel Program will carry his spirit in our souls forever.

While I never officially met Steve and Ian, I was introduced to them on social media via common friends. I will always remember Steve's posts and continuous "likes" as we shared the same zest for exotic vacations, days at the beach and of course our cocktail hour. My heart bleeds for you, Ian, as I know how much he meant to you as a husband, a partner in life and best friend. I never met Steve, but watched daily through Ian's beautiful posts on Facebook. We were all of part of this love, because we got to watch it, and be joyed by it, daily. Our collective hearts are broken, because to witness something so loving, and then to imagine Ian's pain, is almost unbearable.
