Karen Slater Obituary

SLATER, Karen May passed away on January 19, 2012, after a long illness. She was born on October 9, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY. After living in Glen Oaks, NY, for a number of years, she moved with her family to Westport, CT in 1955, attending Staples High School and graduating from the Mary A. Burnham School in Northampton Massachusetts in 1961 and from Pembroke College (now Brown University) in 1965. Upon graduation Karen worked for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and then worked for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management. She headed the Congressional Affairs Office and later the Intergovernmental Affairs Office. She retired in 2009 and had received numerous awards and commendations. Karen resided in Annandale, VA with her life partner and faithful companion Mark G. Schoenberg from 1979 until her passing. Karen is also survived by her sister Penelope Muller, of Farmington, Maine, her brother, Ralph Slater, of Ridgefield, CT, and 4 nephews. Services will be private. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Karen’s memory be made to the Nature Conservancy, account number 2606002, 4245 N.
