My dear Hempton,
Why did you leave us so soon? You will be missed more than your ever so humble self would imagine.
When I met you in the fall of '69, I knew that you would be a good friend. I always enjoyed your companionship and was honored that you valued our friendship.
I admired your knowledge and appreciation of history, classical music, good movies, and all matters nautical. If only you had shown an interest in baseball, you would have been a perfect person. How you could live so close to Queens and not be a Met fan was always a mystery to me.
You truly had a unique and subtle sense of humor and I enjoyed it emmensely. One year prior to our Men's cruise I expressed to you that I was so excited that I whimsically served a cup of tea in my Price Albert china. You thought that excessive and chided me that the Royal Doulton with the periwinkel design would have been more appropriate.
Only you, Mr. Hempton, could find a Christmas card wishing us a moderately pleasant holiday season within the confines of good taste and proper decorum.
Ah, my hear Hempton, words cannot expres how much you will be missed.
I will always remain
Your faithful and obedient servant,
Mr. Heap
PS: I have placed a gentle kiss on Mrs. Heap's cheek in your honor.

Tom and I had many, many good times during our "formative years" and through High School. Whether planning for a Boy Scout event, a rigorous backpack, sailing Hempstead Harbor on his nifty Sunfish, or sharing a good laugh, ours was an easy friendship I will always treasure. Tom gave freely from his heart and never asked for anything in return. Rest in peace my friend, and God bless and keep your wonderful family.

Tom and I went to college together, so my memories are from those college days. Sorry to hear about his passing. I hope he bought a big enough boat. I remember him saying that you buy boats two feet at a time. My sympathies and best wishes go out to his family. May the days to come bring out those good things that are Tom Hempton.

Tommy was a presence in our lives and meant solidarity to our Glen Cove Yacht Club. His warm smile, tolerance of all of our contrary views, and the integrity he brought to his role as treasurer, opens a gap in our community of boaters. Whether heading out to a club race, standing behind the bar to serve us at important occasions, or delivering the message on the state of club finances, his leadership and friendship will be sorely missed. We mourn the loss of our friend and fellow club leader, Tommy Hempton.
