LEUPOLD, Karl J., P. E. formerly of Locust Valley, NY and Madison, NJ on December 9, 2013 at the age of 74. Beloved husband of Nancy E., loving father of Kristine Marino, Doreen Mitchell (Pierre), and Suzanne. Dear brother of Irene Boehmler (Walter) and Marion. Proud grandfather of Taylor, Jordan, Kendall, Benjamin, Charlie, and Katie. Also survived by three nieces and three nephews. After receiving his civil engineering degree from Duke University and serving in the U.S. Marine Corp as a Captain of an Engineering Company, Karl worked as an engineer and Assistant Superintendent for Con Edison before joining the Town of Oyster Bay in 1967. He was a Town Engineer, followed by Superintendent of Engineering and Deputy Commissioner of Public Works. In 1990, he became Commissioner of Public Works for the Town of Oyster Bay and remained in that position until his retirement in September of 2002. During his tenure with the Town, Karl became a Lifetime Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers as well as a “Fellow” of said society. He was also a longtime member of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers, Nassau County Chapter, and was designated as “Engineer of the Year” in 1997. While fulfilling his Town and family responsibilities, Karl has also given generously of his time and talents to a variety of of organizations and causes, serving as a member and President of the Locust Valley Rotary Club, a Scoutmaster in Locust Valley, NY for 10 years, a member of the Board of Directors of the United Presbyterian Home, Syosset, NY, and the Long Island Heart Council. He also served as a Sunday School teacher and an Elder in the Reformed Church of Locust Valley for many years.
