I spent nearly a decade in the 1980s, riding the LIRR, across from Neil Cowan. He was an extraordinary man, with quite some personality. I regarded him well, and thought of him this evening, Jan 23, 2015. I am sorry I missed contacting him again. He died on my mother's birthday, and was buried on my father's birthday. To his family, I will tell you, I held him in extremely high regard.

At the end of the day, the importance of our time on this earth is manifest in the trail we leave behind. Neil's thoughtfulness, generosity, and enthusiasm for Ruth and his family, leave behind a trail that will never grow over. God bless all of you.

Obviously, we are not physically with you this morning. Actually, I guess the service is just now ending. Instead, I am taking the morning off to write the memories Ruth requested . . . and to reread sections of Our Parents Lives. Of all things--It started with a condolence call!

I am so glad that I got to meet Emily's Uncle Neil in Baltimore many years ago. I extend my heartfelt sympathy and that of our Beit Tikvah community to the Cowan family. May his memory be a blessing.

Neil and Ruth had such a true partnership; he was such a support to her in her work, and they had plans for work to do together. My prayers for Ruth, for their children and grandchildren in their loss. I will light candles for Neil and for Ruth in my church.
