I learned today that Professor Cavallo had past away and how saddened I was by the news. I took three courses with Professor Cavallo each semester I went to Adelphi until I graduated in spring of 2010. I will always remember his lectures on Woodstock and the discussions we had on Watergate for my senior seminar. I will also remember how helpful he was in a writing recommendation that I needed to send to C.W. Post to go there for my masters degree. Dom Cavallo was my favorite professor at Adelphi and he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I learned today of Dominick's death.I met him i9n 6th grade at William Floyd School, lost touch after 8th grade when he went to Catholic high school, but was reacquainted with him after high school through my friend's Dennis Fagan and Marty Van Lith.I was never close, but respected and admired him greatly. He was a great scholar and a really good man.I might have seen Dominick at friend's celebrations or family occasions to come, but alas shall not now.I will miss him.

Dr. Cavallo influenced me more than any other professor at Adelphi. I sadly learned of his passing when recommending one of his books to my students. Indeed, he shaped me as a high school and college history teacher. My deepest belated condolences. A great man.

I knew Dom way back when we were 20. You couldn't find a more adventurous, witty, engaging fun boon companion! He, Vito and I were like the 3 musketiers then, filled with the hope and wonder of youth. When the war came in the mid 60's we were challanged beyond anything we had anticipated by the radical changes in our country faced. Dom responded by becoming an intellectual leader and later a tireless teacher and mentor. I am proud to have been his friend.

The passing of Prof. Cavallo is such a sad loss for Adelphi University. I only wish that every student had the opportunity to experience his wit and wisdom. I will always remember his kindness and will think fondly of him each time I pass by Blodgett Hall. Rest in Peace

Prof. Cavallo was an unbelievable man and a great intellect. I had him for the American Family course, which was, one of the best courses I took in the history program. I remember him commenting on how he attended Woodstock and loved the music, but found the conditions way too dirty and muddy! He and I had some fantastic conversations about 19th century New York City, the gangs, and the tenements. I remember that when I emailed him telling him of getting a job 4 years ago he responded, "Wow, a history major actually doing a job with history!" He was an historian through and through, and will be missed.
May perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

I am truly saddened to hear this news. Prof. Cavallo was an amazing teacher who changed my thinking for the better. The two papers from his class are the only two things I've kept from college, because his commentary was so wonderful.

Professor Cavallo was my professor, advisor, and mentor during my years at Adelphi. I learned a great deal about research from him and was lucky enough to work with him on some of his research. Fittingly, on the day I learned of his passing I was working with my 10th grade students in the school library on a research project. What he gave to his students lives on through each of us. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to know and work with Professor Cavallo, and I am a better teacher and person for having known him. He was an amazing person and he will be missed, but always remembered fondly. As he so frequently ended his emails - Hang in There. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I never had Prof. Cavallo as a teacher at Adelphi, but I knew him through my time as editor of the school paper and, later, when I came back to teach a summer course for the department. He was also so kind and generous with his time and advice. As I've undertaken a Ph.D. in history he's always been encouraging when I see him on my many visits back to the department. His family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Words can not describe the impact Professor Cavallo had on the lives of all his students. As a History major, I had the opportunity to get to know Professor Cavallo in great extent. His passion for helping his students was unspeakable. He was always available for professional as well as casual conversations. I want to extent my sympathy to his loved ones. Adelphi University's past history majors will miss him!
I always considered Professor Cavallo a mentor.

Professor Cavallo was my advisor at Adelphi, the person who ignited in me a passion for the social movements of the 1960s, which I am still studying, at the PhD level, now. I continue to think of him fondly, after all these years, and this news touches me deeply. In my mind, people like Dom Cavallo, who meant so much to so many, never die. They continue to shine their light and guide the way for the next generation. My deepest sympathies.

Dear JoAnn,
I work with Alex. I am so sorry for your loss. Alex told me about the beautiful and amazing love you and Dom had for each other, and how even after 20 years, the love was as strong as ever. You and Dom were very lucky to have had that kind of a relationship.
I am thinking about you.

I've been teaching at Adelphi for 5 years and throughout that time Dom was very supportive. He took an interest in my research and even invited me to participate in one of his projects. I very much appreciated his encouragement and will miss him. Plus, nobody makes jeans and a jacket look as stylish as he did!

Dom was a great colleague. When I was fairly new at Adelphi and still untenured, he read an article that I had recently published. (He wasnt even on any committee, at that time, that required him to do so!) Then, he wrote me a very long (and positive) note about it. For a new scholar, that kind of effort and unsolicited feedback from an established scholar is very rare and very valuable. It really touched me. Since then, Dom and I shared many conversations about everything from tenure stress to why education alone cant solve poverty (although it is clearly important). He was always humane, caring, and articulate. Ill miss him.

Professor Cavallo was not only one of the most caring and dedicated professors at Adelphi but I considered him a true friend. I had the pleasure of taking six different classes with him including my senior thesis class. He genuinely cared about each individual student and would go above and beyond to help them in their future endeavors. If it wasn't for Professor Cavallo I know I wouldn't be where I am, pursuing my administration licence and eventually writing my Phd. I dedicate my future education endeavors to him and just wish I had one more chance to tell him how much of an impact he had on my life. You will be missed Professor.
