Obituary of Morrie Helitzer

HELITZER, Morrie S. of Sea Cliff, NY, died the morning of March 26, 2015. He was 89 years old. Morrie was born in Manhattan on June 8, 1925. He served during World War II in the US Navy in the Pacific theater. For many years, Morrie worked internationally as a journalist for United Press and the International News Service. In 1948, INS sent Morrie to Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Belgrade where he worked as a foreign correspondent and bureau chief. He was there during the Berlin Airlift. In 1956, McGrawHill World News sent Morrie to London to open a news bureau, then to Bonn, Germany to do the same. In 1960, Morrie was the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Fellowship. He worked as Assistant to the President of McGrawHill Book Co., then as Vice President for Public Affairs. Later he he founded and published several magazines. At age 87 Morrie completed his last of five years as an adjunct professor of Writing and Public Speaking at St. John's University. He was an active member of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove. He is survived by his wife, Irene; his son Jonathan; his daughters Cynthia, Eve and Elizabeth; his daughter-in-law Michelle Helitzer; his sons-in-law, Joseph Foristel and Matthew Temkin; and his
grandchildren, Adam Helitzer, Eliane Helitzer, Sara Foristel, Gretchen Helitzer and Kirsten Helitzer. Visitation will be held Sunday 9-10am. Funeral service will will follow at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home. Interment at New Montefiore Cemetery.
