After leaving our graduating class I didn't see Ruth again until our 50th reunion in Sea Cliff in 2011, although I had interviewed her earlier for the school and community history (Look Back and Cheer). I said then in her profile, "Was she ever the 'timid, tall and gawky" teenager she once thought herself? Underlying her physical and quiet personal grace (the way many saw her then and see her now) "Ruthie" has always been invisibly rugged. . . . "I had to be a fighter. I had two brothers." That training stood her in good stead when she confronted a local bully who enjoyed teasing and picking on other kids. 'In 6th grade at St. Boniface I decked _________ _________ __________." [I leave his name out since he went on to serve honorably in the US Navy and is a gentle man who loves his family and his pets.]
In our interview Ruth said her children were the "best magic in life that has ever happened to me, and they continue to velvetize my life." I suspect her children might say something similar of Ruth, and in that she lives on.

Oh Ruthie, I am heart broken at your passing. Many years ago, you, Janice, and myself met at nursing school and have been friends since. We had many experiences and journeys over all these years and took several vacations together as well. Since I only spoke to you several days before, I am overwhelmed and surprised to hear of your passing. Rest easy my friend, no more struggles. I will miss you, love you. Patty

My dear friend Ruthie of 36 years. We met at Farmingdale University in the nursing program. You, Pat, and myself met every couple of months until your move 18 months ago. I hated to see you go, as I knew we all would not spend as much time together. I also worried about who would take care of you down there - your sisters health is not the best. But, you wanted to go and did. I am SOO happy I was able to spend four days with you this past June. We shopped, bought peace candles, I shaved your hair as you were anxious to have that done. We stocked up your fridge, I bought you a book on hope, and sat and talked and drank coffee. It was a cherished time to have spent with you. I was so hoping to come back this fall. You face timed me on 8-15, and died on the 21st. You told me about your visit to the ed with inspiratory pain. Remember, we were both crying on the phone. And, lastly you thanked me again for coming down to help. That was nothing, this is what friends do for each other. I am so sad you are gone. You were a wonderful friend to me. Love you Ruthie! Say hello to my parents for me. Be at peace with no more lung cancer. I will miss you terribly.

Ruth- did you know her name was derived from the Hebrew work (re'ut) meaning "friend"? Ruth was our friend from a child growing up on Lafayette Avenue in Sea Cliff to the very end of her life in North Caroling.
Perhaps I should give Ruth's parents credit for making us fell we were part of their family. My relationship with the Ahearn family started with Ruth's brothers Bob and John and their sister, Mary Louise. Mary Louise and I were always challenged (AND WON)by Bob and Red when we played stick ball against the barn in their backyard.
As a teenager, Ruth would prepare lunch for Bob and me when we caddied at North Shore County Club. She made the BEST BLT'S! All of a sudden we all grew up. Some of us married sooner than others, but we still continued our friendships. Coming out of the Marine Corps in 1961, and married, Ruth's husband, Jerry, gave me my first teaching position at Syosset High School. That's when Carol and Ruth became good friends.
Ruth and Carol were two determined women? Where there was a will, there was a way! While their husbands were busy doing their teaching and sports things, Ruth and Carol became carpenters. They not only built families, they built headboards for their beds, under the tutelage of Paul Driscoll, the Industrial Arts Teacher at Sea Cliff HS. Career changes took us away from LI, but we always stayed in contact with the Ahearns. We were honored to be invited to their family reunion in California. It was so good to see of the the clan together. That gathering was an experience we will never forget. THANK YOU. Ruth, you are one of a kind. God blessed us by bringing you into this world. We will miss you, dear friend.
