STOCKELL, Mercer Logan, a prominent trademark attorney, died on November 23, 2012, at his home in

Glen Cove, New York. He was 91. Mr. Stockell was a senior partner at the law firms of Rogers Hoge &

Hills and later Pennie & Edmonds, both located in New York City. For over fifty years, he represented

many of the most prominent brands of his time, including IBM, TEXACO, BLACK & DECKER, BACARDI,

AMERICAN TOBACCO, LUCKY STRIKE, PALL MALL, SWINGLINE, JIM BEAM, MASTER LOCK, SUNSHINE,

ANDREW JERGENS, KALUHA, TIA MARIA, WILSON JONES, JACK DANIELS, MARTINI & ROSSI, AMF,

TITLEIST, and many others, and was highly influential in the development of this area of law.

Mr. Stockell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of the late Matthew Delamere Cooper Stockell,

whose colorful life included being a cowboy out West and service in World War I, and Dorthea

Spotswood Logan, one of six daughters of the Rev. Dr. Mercer Patton Logan. Mr. Stockell graduated

from the University of the South, fondly known as “Sewanee,” with a degree in economics in 1943, and

immediately enlisted into the US Marine Corps. He was a Captain in the US Marines in World War II. He

was stationed on the Island of Kawaii in the South Pacific during World War II and fought in numerous

battles, including the Battle of Peleliu, code-named Operation Stalemate II, and known as the "bitterest

battle of the war for the Marines" due to its high number of casualties. Upon returning home from the

war, Mr. Stockell attended Harvard Law School, earning his law degree in 1948.

Mr. Stockell was married for 47 years to Eliane Grignard Stockell, who predeceased him in 1997. He is

survived by his three children, Mercer Logan Stockell, Jr. (Stoney) of Glen Cove, Albert Grignard Stockell

(husband of Dorothy Russell Stockell) of Nairobi, Kenya, and Catherine Higgins Stockell Bannon (wife

of Edmond R. Bannon) of North Salem, New York, and New York City. He is furthered survived by six

beloved grandchildren, Justin, Lillian, Evan, Eddie, Ellen, and Michael, as well as by many treasured in-

laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
