It is with profound sadness, and with the deepest reverence for a life extraordinarily well lived, that the community of Upper Brookville mourns the passing of the Honorable John Pieper — beloved Village Justice, trusted counselor, devoted family man, and a quiet pillar of justice for more than three decades.
Judge Pieper presided over this village court not as a distant administrator of rules, but as a neighbor who understood that the law, at its finest, is an expression of community values. Over more than 10,000 cases spanning five mayoral administrations, he brought to the bench wisdom, patience, and an abiding belief in the dignity of every person who stood before him.
Judge Pieper’s greatest gift was not his encyclopedic knowledge of the law — although that was formidable. It was his capacity to listen. He had his ear to the pulse of the village. He could resolve a dispute between neighbors over a misplaced spotlight with the same calm authority he brought to the weightiest matters before the court. He dispensed justice like a father from the bench: firm in principle, yet never beyond offering a life lesson where one was needed.
He treated plaintiffs, defendants, and attorneys alike with equal respect. He commanded the courtroom not through severity, but through the steady, unshakeable fairness that came from a man who had spent a lifetime studying justice — and living it.
Judge Pieper’s life was a testament to what disciplined devotion can build.
For fifty years, he taught bar examination preparation courses to aspiring attorneys, passing the bar himself 32 times across the country — not for credential, but for conscience. He wanted to know precisely what he was teaching. He was a cool guy. He rode his motorcycle to many of those exams, in quiet defiance of a professor who once scolded him for having one.
He ran 25 marathons. He rose before dawn so he could be at the office by five o’clock in the morning — not merely to work, but so that he could leave in time to attend his children’s sporting events. He was a father who showed up. He raised three children — Troy, Damian, and Kristina — all of whom became lawyers. We were overjoyed last year when his son Troy agreed to succeed him on the bench. Troy continued his dad’s tradition of fairness, empathy, and quiet service but sadly, his distinguished tenure was way too short.
Judge Pieper served without pay. He served without fanfare. He served because he believed the village he called home deserved someone who cared about it.
The Village of Upper Brookville has lost more than a jurist. It has lost a guardian. The bench he and then Troy occupied for over three decades was not simply a seat of authority — it was, in the truest sense, a seat of care.
To his beloved wife Karin, to his children Damian, and Kristina, and to his cherished grandchildren: we share in your grief, and we are grateful that these men were ours, even for a time.

The nicest person I have ever known. The best friend you could ever have ……always offering to help with anything.
Most memorable conversation was about starting his bar review course……at the time he had 17 signed up. Turned out pretty great
Had lunch regularly since law school when not in the service. A great person and friend. Not ashamed to admit that I start crying every time I think about the loss to his family myself and frankly all who knew him.

Mr. Pieper was a man of extraordinary character, integrity and intellect. Taking his bar course was to watch brilliance in action. He was super charismatic and could explain the most difficult legal concepts in such clear and easy terms that even non lawyers could understand them. I was in awe of him then, almost 30 years ago, and I remain in awe of him today. There will never be another one quite like Mr. Pieper. May God rest his lovely soul.

A man of the highest integrity and compassion. Joe was a unique everyman who could walk among the famous and powerful and still found himself grounded to the ideals and yearnings of the common populace. My wife and I shall miss him forever in our hearts

My deepest condolence's to the Pieper family. Mr. P you will be missed terribly by everyone who had the pleasure of learning from you. I had the pleasure of working for you and learning about bar review. Your smile was contagious and the day you let me drive the Porsche to Hofstra made my day :) may you rest in peace. God bless.
