Obituary of Michael Robert Martone

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Michael R. "Mickey" Martone, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Glen Cove, New York, on June 25, 2025.  Mickey is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joanne (Ceriello), his devoted daughter Gigi Banks and her husband John Banks, and his cherished grandchildren, Casey and Clayton. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Jr., in 2003.

Known as "Mickey" to his family, friends, and colleagues, he was a proud graduate of Lehigh University, Class of 1956, and New York Law School, Class of 1959.  Mickey began his distinguished legal career in the Nassau County Attorney's Office in 1961, where he rose to the position of Senior Deputy County Attorney, overseeing Condemnation, Tax Assessment Review, and Public Works Contracts. He would go on to become one of the most influential figures in the field of tax certiorari in New York State.

A lifelong resident of Glen Cove, Mickey was dedicated to public service. He served as Commissioner of Public Safety and as Secretary of the Board for The Community Hospital at Glen Cove. He was also a member of the Board of Advisors for the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, where he held the title of Member Emeritus. In addition, he was an active supporter of the Nassau County Museum of Art.

In 1971, Mickey joined his friend and former colleague, the late Adolph Koeppel, to form what would eventually become Koeppel, Martone & Leistman, LLP. His leadership and vision during the firm's early years helped transform the practice of tax certiorari law, setting a standard still followed today.

While Mickey achieved great success in his field, it was the trust and respect of his clients, colleagues, and friends that he valued most. Whether representing a large corporation or a local property owner, he brought the same commitment, enthusiasm, and skill. As Managing Partner, he led with dignity, kindness, and a deep respect for everyone around him. He was, in every sense, a gentleman lawyer.

Above all, Mickey cherished his family and his many close friendships. He took great joy in time spent with loved ones and found particular happiness on the golf course at his beloved Brookville Country Club, where he was a member for 64 years and a past president. He and Joanne proudly held the longest-standing active membership at the Club.

Mickey will be remembered for his quick wit, timeless sense of style, love of a good meal, and an even better cigar. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home of Glen Cove on Sunday, June 29th from 3-7pm and Monday, June 30th from 4-8pm. Mass at the Church of St. Rocco on Tuesday, July 1st at 10am. Private interment at St. Patrick's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nosh Delivers. https://www.noshdelivers.org
